Happy and Blessed Feast to all. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary! Today, we commemorate the Immaculate Beauty of our Blessed Mother’s Holy Heart. The historical roots of this feast go back many centuries. In fact, all the way back to the twelfth century, to writers such as St. Anselm (d. 1109) and St. Bernard of Clairvaux (d. 1153). The “Doctor of the Heart of Mary,” St. Bernardine of Siena (1380 -1444), furthered this devotion. The devotion to Mary’s Heart grew in popularity with the visions of St. Catherine Laboure, regarding the Miraculous Medal, and Mary’s Appearances at Fatima, regarding penance for the outrages committed against the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the apparitions at Fatima, Pope Pius XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. That same year, 1942, he assigned the feast day to August 22, the octave of the Assumption. Two years later, on May 4, the Pontiff extended the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to the Universal Church. Following the liturgical reforms of Vatican II in 1969, the feast was given its present place, the day following the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. That day is the Saturday after the second Sunday after Pentecost. (Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary website, Rev. Matthew R. Mauriello)
Let us, therefore, honor and praise our Mother and her heart, with which she loves so tenderly, on this her special day.
Alma Redemptoris Mater
Loving Mother of the Redeemer, Gate of Heaven, Star of the Sea, assist thy people who have fallen yet strive to rise again. To the wonderment of nature, thee bore thy Creator, yet remained a virgin after as before. Thee who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting, have pity on us poor sinners.
Breviary – Night Prayer
Thank you for joining me in honoring our Blessed Mother and please don’t forget to offer little acts of love to her on this her special day.
You prepared the heart of the Virgin Mary to be a fitting home for Your Holy Spirit. By her prayers may we become a more worthy temple of Your glory.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever (Breviary Morning Prayer).
