Hello everyone. Today is Saturday, the day of the week dedicated to the Blessed Mother. When I started this blog, about eight months back, I felt called to promote devotion to the Blessed Mother, with this tool of the New Evangelization. So every Saturday, I post a prayer or reflection. Now eight months ago I did not expect to find myself in the present predicament – I have searched through almost every prayer-book I have and posted all of the prayers to the Blessed Mother. In other words, I am almost out of prayers. All right, it’s a good problem to have, but I still need to post something today. So after some prayer and contemplation, a topic for today’s post came to me: Why does America need Mary – Mother of Good Counsel?
I know this was one of those Heavenly Inspirations, I would have never thought of this on my own. I will give it my best.
Why does America need Mary – Mother of Good Counsel?
The 19th invocation of the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary reads: Mother of Good Counsel, pray for us. This invocation is one of the more peculiar ones in the Litany, yet I also believe it to be one of the more genuine invocations. After all, Virgin Mary has quite the experience when it comes to giving good counsel. Our Lord learned His lessons from her lap. Remember, Jesus Christ is a Divine Person, fully God and at the same time fully Man, One like us in all things but sin. Who was it to whom He ran when he, in His humanity, had those questions – you know, the ones that only mothers can answer? Into who’s arms would He run – Holy Mary’s.
Imagine being the Mother of God. Imagine being His Counselor. What a privilege! What an honor! What a challenge! What a responsibility! God never tries us harder than we can cope. Mary’s vocation of caring for and teaching Our Lord was certainly arduous, yet as we know, God never lays on a burden too heavy to carry. Mary must have been a formidable holy woman and I will add, in the words of a well know priest:”If she is good enough for Jesus, she is good enough for you.”
Now this brings us to the theme of this reflection, why does America need Mary – Mother of Good Counsel? Well to put it bluntly: “we’re lost without her.” This great nation, consecrated to her Immaculate Conception, has enjoyed her intercession and, may I add, intervention for many years. From sea to shining sea, we have been blessed with a peace, prosperity and faith not seen anywhere else in the world. However, as a nation we are now entering a critical time – a time when poor choices will have deadly consequences. We have the most anti-life President of our national history: a President who has spread tax-payer-funded abortion to all corners of America and the world, a President who reportedly plans to force employers to cover (without co-pay) sterilization and contraception for their employees, a President who denies that Catholic medical professionals have a conscience. In addition, as Catholics we collectively, have failed to reach the mark. Only 30% of us attend Holy Mass on Sundays and approximately 29% do believe in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. This is an abomination and Mary can hold back the Just Arm of God for only so long.
Let us therefore beg Mary – Mother of Good Counsel to enlighten our minds and hearts. Let us ask her to counsel this doubtful nation and grant us the wisdom and fortitude we need to make decisions which will please Almighty God.
Thank you for praying with me, to honor our Blessed Mother and please do not forget to offer up little acts of love to her on this her special day.
