So, everyone, let me simply state the facts. There’s a very important election, coming up in just a few short days; an election that could possibly be the most defining for this great nation since its birth. I’ve not even been present on this earth for a full score (but longer than half-a-score, thank God) and because of my youth and inexperience, I do not feel at liberty to give political commentary in much depth. Nor do I strongly desire to get into quibble about details. However, I, in my insignificance, do wish to share some basic facts in the area where our Faith, as Roman Catholics, and our Civic Duty, as American Citizens, touch.
To start, I wish to remind y’all that this country is in a mess. This “reminding” job is pretty easy, thanks to the constant bombardment of political ads we’ve received for the past several months. However, the content of these ads often times doesn’t touch upon the most dangerous (and silent) predicament we, as a nation, are in. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are in a moral mess and we’re in it up to our eyebrows; and by the way that things are shaping up – if we don’t do something very decisive, we are only going to sink deeper, faster into this quicksand of moral turpitude.
As we approach the polls, as Catholics, let us keep in mind these “Non-negotiable” issues, spelled out by Bishop David L. Ricken, in a recent letter to his Diocese of Green Bay:
- Embryonic Stem Cell Research
- Human Cloning
- Homosexual “Marriage” (Click HERE to read Bishop Ricken’s full letter)
Remember, as Catholics, it is wrong and detrimental towards our Eternal Salvation to ignore these key issues at the polls; and to vote rather out of inflamed passions (whether justifiable or unjustifiable) which we may have harbored towards any particular candidate! Use these next few days not only to inform yourselves as to where the candidates stand on these “Non-negotiable” issues, but also, please, spend some time praying and asking the Holy Spirit to form your consciences.
In conclusion, I ask that we all beseech the Patroness of this Great Nation, Our Lady Immaculately Conceived, to be with us as we approach this momentous landmark in our history.
You know, normally I’d share some profoundly beautiful prayer to the Blessed Mother written by a Saint, or a not so profoundly beautiful prayer written by me. However, at this time of such concern, I can think of no prayer more powerful than the “Ave Maria” – do not be deceived by its simplicity. Please join me in prayer:
“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen”
My fellow Catholics, let us take up our crosses and rosaries; let us take these and our pens to the polls. We will, as “One Nation, under GOD,” protect Life, “Liberty and Justice for all!” May I be so bold as to ask each Catholic voter to make the Sign of the Cross before he or she votes in this landmark election?
